5 Daily Questions for Self Care

You ever make it through six hours of your day only to realize you put your shirt on inside out? Or you haven’t had a glass of water? Or you’re long overdue for a bathroom break? When it comes to taking care of yourself, it’s the little things that count. Here are some check-in questions to help.

1. What do I have to do today?

You can’t tackle the day if you don’t know what it is you’re tackling. Counter the anxiety that comes with uncertainty by setting clear goals at the start of the day.

2. What do I need in order to do the things I need to get done?

Preparation is key. Once you know what it is you absolutely have to do, consider what you personally need in order to do it. Do you need to run an errand, or eat a meal, or make a phone call? Get your affairs in order before you get going on the rest of your day.

3. Have I had something to eat/drink today?

There’s nothing quite like losing track of time to derail the fulfillment of your most fundamental needs. Work. School. Errands. Phone time. Where’d the time go? Six whole hours of it?? Without a glass of water or a trip to the bathroom or a bite to eat? Now is the time!

4. Do I need a break? / Can I take a break?

Flexing your brain is great, but like all muscles, you’ve gotta give it some time to rest. If you’ve been working hard, if your energy level is low, if you need a stretch, a walk, a nap, a shower, an hour of scroll time or tv time, don’t forget to give yourself that break. Even if it’s just long enough to take some deep breaths.

5. What do I have to look forward to?

The end is near! You’re in the home stretch! Take a second to remind yourself of what awaits you at the end of the day, week, month, or year. What is it that you’re working towards? Whether it’s a trip, a day off, or just a good night’s sleep, remind yourself that it’s within reach.

Bonus: Is it time to call it a day?

If the answer is yes, congratulations! Get some rest and get ready to do it again the next day.
