5 Small Ways to Feel Less Lonely

If you’re feeling lonely, you are not alone in that feeling. A 2023 report issued by the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General found that, before the COVID-19 pandemic, half of U.S. adults reported experiencing loneliness. Addressing loneliness challenges us to seek out connection, even when it’s hard. Here are a few small ways to do just that.

Call a Friend

You don’t have to be in person to communicate! Call or text or video call or leave an extended, rambling voicemail or voice note to a loved one. Technology has made it easier now more than ever before to build and sustain relationships no matter your location. But that technology cannot help you if you don’t use it. Remember, the person on the other end might be in need of some long-distance company, too.

Volunteer

If you want to get connected to the people around you, volunteering is a great way to do it. Do a quick scan of public programs, mutual aid, conservation, food security, or other community initiatives in your area. If you see something you’re passionate about, get involved! It’s a great way to meet people with similar interests and do some good while you’re at it.

Listen to a Podcast

The more people talking, the better! There’s a reason that, in the good ole days, entire families would crowd around radios to listen to news and stories from near and far. When you hear the voice on the radio (or the podcast!) talk, you know that that voice is talking to you. You’re the audience. You’re not talking to the speaker face-to-face, but you’re still having a conversation.

Get a Pen Pal

PSA: You can send good vibes in the snail mail! Having a pen pal, or a friend you correspond with via letters, is an old school idea that’s back in fashion. Your pen pal can be someone you know already, like a friend or a relative or an acquaintance. You can also find a pen pal through online forums, public initiatives, or organizations that foster social bonds through pen pal relationships with people who are incarcerated or elderly.

Skip the Small Talk

Hmm if only there was an organization dedicated to fostering deep conversation and connections between people IRL and online. Oh wait, there is! Here’s a shameless self-plug for Skip the Small Talk events, where you can have meaningful conversations with new people guided by experienced facilitators. In other words, the dream!
